Former Diner Employee Serves up Success With Help From NCWorks in Clayton

In Aug. 2022, Jennifer Kehrer, completed an 11-week training course at Johnston Community College to receive her ServSafe Manager certification, elevating her from a part-time job at a diner to a full-time position in the hospitality industry.

This certification, made possible by a training scholarship from NCWorks, provided Kehrer with the resources to pursue a career in her desired industry.

“The training helped me to further my responsibilities at my current job, and I now feel confident to pursue more advanced opportunities in hospitality management. I am continuing with the Culinary Techniques course and excited for new possibilities,” said Kehrer.

Kehrer’s hospitality training at Johnston Community College inspired her to reach a higher level of professionalism in food/beverage service. With mentorship from her instructor, Chef Robbie Carver, Kehrer had several unique experiences in the kitchen. In the Culinary I course, she learned about catering strategies, menu planning, and most importantly was able to exhibit hands-on cooking skills.

Jennifer was able to exhibit hands-on cooking skills and created multiple delicious dishes.

Over the duration of the 11 weeks Kehrer made the most of her experience. Kehrer not only refined her professional development after attending the “Show ‘em What You Got Resume Workshop”, she also exhibited valuable leadership qualities by hosting a final exam study session for her classmates.

When asked if she would recommend this training to others, Kehrer did not hesitate with her response.

“Yes! Absolutely. The instruction is informative and relatable. The skills acquired in this course can be used in work and in day-to-day life. I developed friendships within the class and gained a positive reference from the instructor,” said Kehrer.
